02 · Bail process

How Bail Bonds Work in St. Michael

The usual path after a St. Michael arrest. Every case is different; the court makes the decisions and no release time is guaranteed.

  1. 01

    Step 1 of 6

Arrest or Citation in St. Michael

Deputies serving St. Michael under the city's contract typically respond. The outcome may be a citation, a summons, or an arrest and booking.

  2. 02

    Step 2 of 6

Confirm Wright County Jail Custody or Another Facility

Most people booked after a St. Michael arrest go to Wright County Jail in Buffalo. Check the Jail Census or call 763-684-2381; an arrest by another agency may mean a different facility.

  3. 03

    Step 3 of 6

    Verify Bail and Court Conditions

Wright County District Court sets any bail and attaches release conditions. Some people are released without bail.

  4. 04

    Step 4 of 6

    Contact GPS About Bond Options

Once custody and the court's terms are confirmed, GPS can explain whether an eligible surety bond is available.

  5. 05

    Step 5 of 6

Complete Premium, Cosigner and Paperwork Requirements

Expect the approved premium, identification, a signed indemnity agreement and, if needed, a cosigner or collateral.

  6. 06

    Step 6 of 6

Post Authorized Bond and Follow Court Orders

When approved, the bond is posted. Holds or jail processing can affect timing, so no release time is promised. Every court date and condition must be kept.

Bail Bond Services in St. Michael

Each statewide GPS guide explains how bail works for that charge in Minnesota. The same guidance applies to a St. Michael arrest.

Not every charge is eligible for bail, and no amounts are guaranteed — the court decides in each case.

05 · Costs

What Bail Bonds Cost in St. Michael

St. Michael does not have a separate city bail bond premium schedule. Wright County District Court determines monetary bail and release conditions, while Minnesota's filed-rate and statutory rules govern commercial surety premiums statewide.

Court-Set Bail vs. Bond Premium

The court sets the bail amount. Paying it directly in cash is one option. A surety bond instead costs a premium — a fee paid to the bail bond agency that is not returned at the end of the case.
Minnesota Criminal Procedure Rule 6 (opens an external site)

Filed Surety Rates & Minimum Upfront Payment

Under Minn. Stat. §60M.02, premiums follow rates filed with the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Bonds of $10,000 or less require at least 50% of the premium collected before posting; bonds greater than $10,000 require at least 30% collected before posting. Any unpaid premium balance requires the applicable approved, signed promissory note and the statutory repayment terms. The statutory minimum premium remains $100.
Minnesota §60M.02 — Bail Bond Premiums (opens an external site)

Promissory Note & Repayment

Any unpaid premium balance is put in writing, with a payment schedule and any allowed interest. The signer is responsible for that balance regardless of how the case ends. The same §60M.02 rules above govern premium payment.

Collateral & Cosigner Responsibilities

Some bonds require collateral or a cosigner. Minn. Stat. §60M.03 governs how collateral is held and returned. A cosigner may owe the full bond if the defendant misses court.

  • Locating a St. Michael Arrestee

Search the Sheriff's Jail Census and confirm with the jail. If the arrest happened just over the line in Hennepin County, or by a Hennepin agency, the person may be in a Hennepin County facility instead.

  • County Jail Booking

Booking at Wright County Jail involves identification, photographs and records processing, so a recent arrest may not show up in jail reports right away. A citation or summons does not automatically mean someone was booked.

  • Official Inmate Search

The Sheriff's jail page links the Jail Census (people currently held), the Jail Media Report (recent bookings — some may already be released), weekly booking data and the in-custody court calendar. They are different records and are not refreshed continuously. GPS is independent of them and cannot change them.

  • Bail and Release Conditions

Wright County District Court may release someone on conditions, set money bail, or both. Conditions such as no-contact or no-alcohol terms still apply after a bond is posted.

  • Cash Bail vs. Surety Bond

Cash bail paid to the county is different from a surety premium paid to GPS. The Sheriff's FAQ says to confirm the bail amount and conditions first; direct cash bail is handled through Wright County Jail reception by jail staff. That procedure does not define how GPS accepts payment.

  • Probation and Other Holds

A missed court date, probation hold or a case in Hennepin or another county can keep someone in custody after bail is posted on the St. Michael case. See our Failure to Appear and Probation Violation guides.

  • Court dates

    Court Appearance Information

Wright County District Court handles cases filed within its jurisdiction and decides bail or conditions of release. Some case details and hearing dates can be checked through Minnesota Court Records Online, but not every hearing appears publicly, and MCRO is not a jail roster or a complete live warrant check. Court records are separate from jail custody information. Release paperwork lists the next court date — every appearance is required. Public court calendars can change, so confirm the person's required appearance directly with the court.
