Government-operated facility

Official Sherburne County Jail Information

The Sherburne County Jail is a regional correctional facility operated by the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office. The county describes it as a 732-bed facility that houses people held by Sherburne County and by other authorities, including federal agencies — so being held here doesn't by itself mean someone has a Sherburne County criminal case.

01 · Overview & contact

Sherburne County Jail Overview & Contact Information

Sherburne County Jail is located in Elk River and is operated by the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office. It is a regional detention facility used by Sherburne County and other governmental authorities. A person's detention at this facility does not automatically establish where a criminal case is filed or whether a commercial bail bond is available.

  • Jail Location & Directions

13880 Business Center Drive NWElk River, MN 55330

The jail is on the Sherburne County Government Center campus in Elk River. Different entrances serve different purposes, so check which door you need before you arrive.

  • Jail Custody Inquiries

    Jail: 763-765-3800

Call the jail to confirm whether someone is in custody, ask about available bail and get facility-specific processing information. Have the person's correct full name and date of birth ready — the county requires both for bail information.

  • Sheriff's Office Administration

Sherburne County Sheriff's Office13880 Business Center Drive NW, Suite 100Elk River, MN 55330

    General office: 763-765-3500

The Sheriff's Office general line handles administration and non-jail questions. It is a separate number from the jail's custody and bail line.

  • Regional & Federal Custody

Besides people held by Sherburne County, the county says the jail houses people under federal authorities — including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs — and other agencies.

    • Someone held for another agency follows that agency's release process.
    • Federal immigration detention is not Minnesota criminal bail.
    • A Minnesota commercial bail bond may not apply to a federal hold.
  • District Court Information

Sherburne County District Court13880 Business Center DriveElk River, MN 55330

    Court: 763-284-7140

Sherburne County District Court is part of Minnesota's Tenth Judicial District. The court — not GPS and not jail staff — sets criminal bail and release conditions. Court records and the jail roster are separate systems.

  • Official Jail & Release Resources

Each official source answers a different question:

    • Jail procedures and facility policies — the county jail pages.
    • Custody search — the Sheriff's inmate search.
    • Bail payment — the county's bail and bond release page.

02 · Booking & custody

Sherburne County Jail Booking & Custody Information

What happens at the facility after an arrest — from booking to release. For step-by-step roster instructions, see our Sherburne County inmate search guide.

  • Arrest & Jail Booking

An arrest and a completed jail booking are not the same event. Booking can involve identity verification, photographs, fingerprints, records processing and custody classification. There's no set time for an arrest to show up as a public roster entry.

  • Confirming Someone Is in Custody

The Sheriff's official inmate search lists people currently in custody at the jail. The public roster may not reflect an arrest right away — if you can't find someone, call the jail.

Read our inmate search guide →
  • Booking Records vs. Court Records

Custody records show reported jail status. Court records cover charges, case events and scheduled hearings. A court case record does not show that a person is still in jail.

  • Other Agency & Federal Holds

The facility may house federal detainees and people held for other agencies. Federal immigration detention and Minnesota criminal bail are different processes. To check ICE custody, use the federal locator — it is not a Sherburne County criminal jail roster.

  • Transfers & Custody Changes

A person may be transferred, released or held under another agency's authority, so a custody record can change. A missing public result does not prove the person was never arrested. Ask the jail or the responsible agency to confirm current custody.

  • Release Authorization & Processing

Once the jail receives authorization to release someone, staff must process the release. The county says people are released directly at the jail lobby when processing is complete. Processing times vary with the time of day and how many people are being released — no release time is guaranteed.

What If Someone Is Not Listed at Sherburne County Jail?

Not finding a name doesn't prove the person was never arrested. Common reasons include:

  • Booking isn't finished or isn't public yet.
  • The person was cited and released.
  • The person has already been released.
  • The person was transferred.
  • Another facility or agency is holding the person.
  • Public access restrictions may apply.

Check the official inmate search, call the jail, or contact GPS and we'll help you work out where to check next.

03 · Visitation & communication

Sherburne County Jail Visitation & Communication

Sherburne County offers scheduled on-site and remote video visitation through NCIC. Visits are video visits, not in-person contact visits, and the rules can change — always check the county's current visitation page before you go.

  • On-Site Video Visitation

On-site video visits are scheduled ahead and free. The county limits each person in custody to one 30-minute on-site visit per day.

    • On-site visits take place at Door I of the Sherburne County Government Center.
    • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
    • Check the current schedule before you travel.
  • Remote Video Visitation

Remote video visits through NCIC can be made from a computer or smartphone. They are by appointment, fee-based and subject to jail policies.

    • The county allows up to five remote visits per day, subject to scheduling rules.
    • Times may change because of jail lockdowns.
    • Availability is never unlimited.
  • Scheduling Through NCIC

    NCIC scheduling & support: 800-943-2189

NCIC Inmate Communications is the county's scheduling provider — a separate company, not the jail. All visits must be scheduled ahead; walk-in visits are not allowed. Remote visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.

  • Visiting Hours, ID & Rules

The county's current visitation page lists scheduled weekday on-site times and marks Saturday, Sunday and government-holiday on-site appointments as currently unavailable. Weekend on-site visits are not confirmed.

    • Follow the dress code and conduct rules.
    • No tobacco, cell phones or other electronics — storage isn't provided.
    • Visitors must supervise children.
  • Inmate Phone Calls

The county uses NCIC for inmate phone service. People in custody get phone access once booking is complete and can make outgoing calls only.

    • Incoming calls to inmates are not possible.
    • Prepaid accounts can be set up through NCIC.
    • Three-way calls are prohibited.
  • Messages, Voicemail & Monitoring

    Voicemail line: 800-943-2189

NCIC also offers approved electronic messaging and voicemail, with charges. Voicemail is only available if the person in custody has called you before.

    • Messages and photos are screened before delivery.
    • Communications may be monitored or recorded.

04 · Inmate services

Sherburne County Jail Inmate Services & Resources

Practical information about money, mail, property and programs at the jail. Each service has its own rules and providers, and none of them is a way to pay bail.

  • Commissary & Inmate Accounts

An inmate account is created at booking. It holds money the person brought in and pays for permitted commissary items, such as snacks and stamps.

    • Account information is available only to the person in custody.
    • On release or transfer, the account is closed and paid out by check or debit card.
    • Account balances are separate from bail.
  • Adding Money to an Account

    Access Corrections: 866-345-1884

The county lists Access Corrections as its deposit provider. Fees may apply to every method.

    • Online deposits.
    • Telephone deposits.
    • Kiosks in the jail lobby and video visitation area — check current hours and accepted payment.
  • Sending Mail & Correspondence

All incoming mail is screened. The county's current rules require the inmate's name and SPN on the front of the envelope, plus the sender's name and address.

    • Mail is copied or scanned — the person doesn't receive the originals.
    • Prohibited items can cause the whole mailing to be returned.
    • Confirm the exact address and current rules before sending documents.
  • Property & Personal Items

Property, clothing and other items are restricted by the facility. Families can't bring arbitrary belongings to the jail — ask jail staff about authorized property procedures.

    • Eyeglasses can't be dropped off or mailed — they're returned.
    • Reading glasses are available through commissary, or provided if someone can't afford them.
    • Books must be ordered through Jail Programs.
  • Medical Needs, Access & Safety

Medical concerns, prescriptions, disability accommodations and safety complaints go through the facility's own procedures. The county provides auxiliary aids for deaf and hard-of-hearing people through its Jail Program Coordinator.

    • The Sheriff's Office has a zero-tolerance policy on sexual abuse and harassment under PREA.
    • For an immediate emergency, call 911.
  • Work Release & Reentry Programs

The county's Work Release (Huber) program is for some sentenced inmates when a court order allows it and jail requirements are met. The Sentence to Serve (STS) community-service program is for qualifying non-violent offenses.

    • These programs are not alternatives to bail.
    • Eligibility and participation are never guaranteed.

05 · Bail & release

Posting Bail at Sherburne County Jail

The court sets bail. Sherburne County Jail accepts direct cash bail at Door D, and Minnesota Statutes Chapter 60M governs commercial bail bond premiums. Here's how the two paths differ.

Court-Set Bail & Release Conditions

The court decides criminal bail and release conditions. Court bail standards allow release on posted bail for some offenses; for others, a person stays in custody until a judge decides bail or conditions. GPS does not set bail or change court orders.

Where to Post Direct Cash Bail

Direct cash bail is posted at Door D — the jail lobby. The Sheriff's Office says bail can be paid there 24 hours a day. Paying the full cash amount to the jail is a separate process from a commercial surety bond.Official bail and bond release information (opens an official external site)

Cash Bail Payment Requirements

For direct cash bail, the county says:Bring the exact cash bail amount.Show a current government-issued photo ID.Credit cards, checks and money orders are not accepted.Bail information: 763-765-3800 — have the person's full name and date of birth ready.

Bail Bonds, Processing & Holds

When a surety bond is permitted, a licensed bail bond company posts the bond for a premium instead of you paying the full cash amount. GPS can explain the premium, documents, cosigner role and payment arrangements. A bond doesn't guarantee immediate release — warrants, other agency holds, processing or court conditions can affect the outcome.

Before You Go to the Jail to Post Bail

General information only — the jail and the court make every custody and release decision.

  1. Confirm the person's actual custody status.
  2. Confirm the court-set bail amount and any conditions.
  3. Decide whether direct cash bail or a permitted surety bond fits.
  4. Bring the right documents and payment where required.
  5. Follow the jail's instructions for release processing.
  6. Remember that release timing can't be guaranteed.

Minnesota Bond Premium Rules

  • The court sets the bail amount — not the jail and not GPS.
  • The premium follows the rate the surety has filed and had approved in Minnesota.
  • The statutory minimum premium is $100.
  • Bonds of $10,000 or less: at least 50% of the premium is collected before posting; any balance is repaid within four months.
  • Bonds over $10,000: at least 30% of the premium is collected before posting; any balance is repaid within at most 12 months.
  • Any balance needs a signed promissory note. No financing or payment plan is guaranteed.
  • Collateral and cosigner requirements depend on the circumstances.
