01 · Why GPS

Why Choose GPS for Stearns County Inmate Search

Stearns County keeps separate current-inmate, past-inmate and warrant searches. GPS can help you pick the right one, understand what it shows, and learn whether a legally authorized surety bond may be available. We can't confirm custody, set bail or guarantee release.

  • Help Understanding Search Results

A roster listing, a past-inmate record and a warrant mean very different things. GPS can explain what a result usually means for bail and what to ask the jail next.

  • Available 24/7

Arrests happen at any hour. Our team answers day or night, weekends and holidays included.

  • Sheriff, Jail & Court Guidance

We can point you to the right office on Courthouse Square — jail central control for custody, the District Court for case records and hearing dates.

  • Clear Bail Premium Information

If a surety bond is available, we explain the premium under Minnesota law before you sign anything.

  • Eligible Surety Bond Assistance

When the court has set bail and a surety bond is allowed, GPS can help arrange the bond. Release is never guaranteed.

  • Minnesota Statewide Coverage

St. Cloud reaches into Benton and Sherburne counties, so a person may be held elsewhere. GPS helps families across Minnesota.

03 · Jail & custody

Stearns County Jail & Custody Information

Stearns County's jail, Sheriff's Office and District Court are all on Courthouse Square in downtown St. Cloud, at separate addresses. Each handles different questions, so it helps to know which one to call.

County jail — Stearns County Sheriff's Office

Stearns County Jail

807 Courthouse SquareSt. Cloud, MN 56303

Central control (24/7): 320-259-3760

A medium/maximum-security jail holding people awaiting court as well as sentenced and Huber/work-release inmates. The county says anyone taken into custody within Stearns County is booked here, even after an arrest by a local police department.

Checking Custody
Use the current-inmate roster, then call central control to confirm. Booking records, current custody, court records and release are separate things.
Asking About Bail
Ask central control whether bail has been set and how it is received. The jail can't give court dates — those come from the court.

Good to know

  • The county charges a $25 booking fee, taken from the inmate's funds.
  • A new county Justice Center is expected to open in 2029; until then, use the Courthouse Square addresses.
  • Procedures can change. Check the official jail pages before you go in person.

04 · Inmate services

Stearns County Jail Visitation & Inmate Services

Once you've found someone, you may want to visit, talk or send money. The jail sets the rules for each, and they can change — always check the official page first.

  • Schedule or Plan Visits

The county posts set visiting periods, year-round:

    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9 a.m.–noon and 1–4 p.m.
    • Thursday: 7–10 p.m. Sunday: 8–11 a.m.
    • No visits on Tuesday or Saturday.
  • On-Site and Remote Visits

The county's visitation page describes non-contact visits through video monitors on the second floor of the Law Enforcement Center.

    • Visitors need photo ID; no visiting list is used.
    • One 20-minute visit per day; may be 15 minutes when busy.
    • The jail lists Inmate Canteen under its visiting and phone links — check there for any remote options and fees.
  • Phone Calls and Messages

Inmates can call out from housing-unit phones.

    • Collect calls or a calling card bought from the canteen.
    • Non-attorney calls are recorded; calls are limited to 15 minutes.
    • Incoming calls aren't forwarded, except verified emergencies or legal counsel.
  • Commissary and Inmate Accounts

Money for an inmate is separate from bail and from a bail bond premium.

    • Deposit online with a credit card through Inmate Canteen.
    • Or deposit cash at the kiosk on the second floor of the Law Enforcement Center.
    • Personal and payroll checks aren't accepted.
  • Mail and Property

Non-legal mail goes to a central processing facility, is scanned, and a printed copy is delivered.

    • Address: Inmate Name – ID Number, Stearns County Jail, PO Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131.
    • Originals are not returned to the sender.
    • Property releases run 6–7 a.m. and 6–7 p.m. daily with an approved release form.
  • Transfers, Release and Records

A custody record can change because of a transfer, a release, a court order or another agency's hold.

    • A roster listing is a snapshot, not a guarantee.
    • Verify current details with the facility holding the person.
    • Court dates come from the court, not the jail.

05 · Bail & release

Bail Options After Locating an Inmate in Stearns County

Minnesota bail works differently from other states. The court sets bail, the jail can tell you how direct bail is received, and Minnesota Statutes Chapter 60M governs commercial bond premiums.

Court-Set Bail and Release Conditions

A Seventh Judicial District judge — or, for some offenses, a court-approved bail schedule — decides bail and release conditions. Neither the jail nor GPS sets bail. The court may add conditions when bail or a bond is posted.

Cash Bail vs. Surety Bond Premium

Cash bail is the full amount paid as a promise to appear. A surety bond lets a licensed bail bond company post the bond for a premium — a fee that is not returned.

Release Processing and Other Holds

Posting bail or a bond doesn't guarantee immediate release. Jail processing, court orders, and holds or warrants from other agencies can delay or prevent release, and GPS cannot guarantee release timing, eligibility or financing.

Minnesota Bond Premium Rules

  • The court sets the bail amount — not the jail and not GPS.
  • The premium follows the rate the surety has filed and had approved in Minnesota.
  • The statutory minimum premium is $100.
  • Bonds of $10,000 or less: at least 50% of the premium is collected before posting; any balance is repaid within four months.
  • Bonds over $10,000: at least 30% of the premium is collected before posting; any balance is repaid within at most 12 months.
  • Any balance needs a signed promissory note. No financing or payment plan is guaranteed.
