01 · Overview & contact

Stearns County Jail Overview & Contact Information

Stearns County Jail is on Courthouse Square in St. Cloud and is operated by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office. The county says anyone taken into custody within Stearns County is booked here, even after an arrest by a local police department. The jail, the Sheriff's offices and the District Court each handle different questions.

02 · Booking & custody

Stearns County Jail Booking & Custody Information

What happens at the facility after an arrest — from booking to release. For step-by-step roster instructions, see our Stearns County inmate search guide.

  • Arrest & Jail Booking

People arrested by the Sheriff's Office or a local police department in Stearns County are booked into the county jail. Booking can involve identity verification, photographs, fingerprints, records processing and custody classification. There's no set time for a booking to appear on the public roster.

  • Confirming Current Custody

The Sheriff's official current-inmate roster lists adults currently in custody at the Stearns County Jail. The county says it can't promise the roster is current, accurate or complete — if you can't find someone, call Central Control.

Read our inmate search guide →
  • Booking Records vs. Court Records

Jail custody, criminal charges, court hearings and case records are separate things. Appearing on the roster shows custody — it doesn't mean someone has been convicted. Court records cover charges and case events.

  • Current, Past & Warrant Records

The county keeps separate searches for different questions. A warrant or a past custody record is not proof that someone is in jail now.

    • Current inmates — adults in custody now.
    • Past inmates — people previously held.
    • Outstanding warrants.
    • Stearns Most Wanted.
  • Transfers & Custody Changes

A new booking, a transfer, a release or another agency's involvement can change a custody record. A missing roster result doesn't prove the person was never arrested. Ask Central Control or the responsible agency to confirm current custody.

  • Release Authorization & Processing

    Central Control: 320-259-3760

Release requires the applicable court or custodial authorization, then jail processing. Central Control can direct you to the correct procedure for a particular case. Processing times vary — no release time is guaranteed.

What If Someone Is Not Listed at Stearns County Jail?

Not finding a name doesn't prove the person was never arrested. Common reasons include:

  • Booking hasn't appeared on the roster yet.
  • The person was cited and released.
  • The person has already been released.
  • The person was transferred.
  • Another agency or facility holds the person.
  • Public access restrictions apply, including for juveniles.

Check the current inmate roster, call Central Control — answered 24/7 — or contact GPS and we'll help you work out where to check next.

03 · Visitation & communication

Stearns County Jail Visitation & Communication

Stearns County Jail visits are non-contact video visits on the second floor of the Law Enforcement Center. The posted schedule runs year-round — check the county's visitation page before you go.

  • On-Site Video Visitation

Visits are non-contact and take place through video monitors on the second floor of the Law Enforcement Center (LEC). They are not face-to-face contact visits.

    • Visits depend on facility rules and the inmate's visiting privileges.
    • Inmates sentenced to less than three days don't receive visiting privileges.
    • An inmate may decline any visit.
  • Visitor Identification & Eligibility

The jail doesn't use visiting lists, but every visitor needs ID. The county prefers:

    • A state ID card.
    • A valid driver's license.
    • Other official photo ID with a physical description and signature.
    • Inmates get one visit per visiting day — 20 minutes, or 15 when busy.
  • Official Visiting Hours

The county's posted schedule, in effect year-round with no holiday changes:

    • Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9:00 a.m.–noon and 1:00–4:00 p.m.
    • Thursday: 7:00–10:00 p.m.
    • Sunday: 8:00–11:00 a.m.
    • No visitation on Tuesday or Saturday.
  • Inmate Canteen & Remote Services

The county's jail page lists Inmate Canteen as its visiting and phone link. Any online or remote options, and their fees, are set by the provider and the jail's rules — remote-from-home visits aren't guaranteed.

  • Inmate Phone Calls

Telephones are in every housing unit and can be used whenever inmates aren't on lockdown.

    • Collect calls, or a jail calling card bought from the canteen.
    • Calls to a lawyer are free; other calls are recorded.
    • Each call is limited to 15 minutes.
  • Communication Rules & Restrictions

    Central Control: 320-259-3760

Inmates and visitors must follow the jail's communication and visiting rules — violations can cost visiting privileges or get a visitor removed.

    • Incoming calls aren't forwarded — only verified emergencies or messages from legal counsel are passed on.
    • Phones must be stored during visits; photos, video and three-way calls aren't allowed.

04 · Inmate services

Stearns County Jail Inmate Services & Resources

Practical information about money, mail, property and programs at the Stearns County Jail. Each has its own rules and providers, and none of them is a way to pay bail.

  • Commissary & Inmate Funds

In most cases, people at the jail are allowed only money — no outside belongings. Approved inmates can use funds for canteen supplies such as toiletries, art materials and mail envelopes, or a debit card at the vending machines.

    • Inmate funds are not bail.
    • A deposit doesn't speed up release.
  • Adding Money to an Inmate Account

The county lists two ways to deposit:

    • Online with a credit card through Inmate Canteen.
    • Cash at the kiosk on the second floor of the Law Enforcement Center.
    • Personal and payroll checks aren't accepted.
    • A mandatory $25 booking fee comes out of inmate funds — a jail charge, not a bail bond premium.
  • Sending Mail & Correspondence

Inmate Name – ID NumberStearns County JailPO Box 247Phoenix, MD 21131

Incoming non-legal mail goes to a central processing facility run by TextBehind, which scans it and delivers a printed copy to the inmate. The address above is the county's current one.

    • This address is for non-legal mail only — legal correspondence is handled separately.
    • Originals aren't returned; they're stored briefly, then destroyed.
    • Find an inmate ID number through Inmate Canteen.
  • Property Release

The county posts two daily property-release periods. Confirm the details with the jail before you arrive.

    • 6:00–7:00 a.m. daily.
    • 6:00–7:00 p.m. daily.
    • The inmate must submit a property release form, approved at least 12 hours before the release.
  • Medical Needs, Accessibility & Safety

The county says it provides auxiliary aids and services for deaf and hard-of-hearing inmates, including free sign-language and oral interpreters and TTYs. Ask jail staff or the Jail Program Coordinator for help.

    • Raise medical and safety concerns through the facility's own procedures.
    • For an immediate emergency, call 911.
  • Work Release & Inmate Programs

    Jail Programs Sergeant: 320-259-3759

Huber/work release is for qualified sentenced individuals with a court order. The county says anyone court-ordered for work release should contact the Jail Programs Sergeant. The jail also relies on volunteers to support many inmate programs.

    • Programs aren't automatically available to every inmate.
    • They are not a substitute for court-set bail.

05 · Bail & release

Posting Bail at Stearns County Jail

The court sets bail. Stearns County's public jail pages don't publish a complete cash-bail payment procedure, so confirm the details with jail Central Control before you go. Minnesota Statutes Chapter 60M governs commercial bail bond premiums.

Court-Set Bail & Release Conditions

A Seventh Judicial District judge — or, for some offenses, a court-approved bail schedule — decides criminal bail and release conditions. Neither the jail nor GPS sets bail or changes court orders.

Where to Post Direct Cash Bail

The county's jail pages don't list a bail window, hours or payment location. Ask Central Control where direct bail is received for the person's case before you travel to Stearns County Jail, 807 Courthouse Square, St. Cloud.Central Control: 320-259-3760 — answered 24/7.Official jail information (opens an official external site)

Cash Bail Payment Requirements

Bail Bonds, Processing & Holds

When a surety bond is permitted, a licensed bail bond company posts the bond for a premium instead of you paying the full cash amount. GPS can explain the premium, documents, cosigner role and payment arrangements. A bond doesn't guarantee immediate release — other warrants, holds or release restrictions can affect eligibility and timing.
