01 · Why GPS

Why Choose GPS for Sherburne County Inmate Search

GPS can help you understand which official resources to check, what to have ready when you call the jail, and whether a legally authorized surety bond may be available. We don't decide custody status or release conditions.

  • Help Understanding Search Results

A listing can be hard to read in a stressful moment. GPS can explain what custody information usually means for bail and what to ask the jail next.

  • Available 24/7

Arrests happen at any hour. Our team answers day or night, weekends and holidays included.

  • Sheriff, Jail & Court Guidance

We can point you to the right office — the jail for custody, the court for case records and hearing dates.

  • Clear Bail Premium Information

If a surety bond is available, we explain the premium under Minnesota law before you sign anything.

  • Eligible Surety Bond Assistance

When the court has set bail and a surety bond is allowed, GPS can help arrange the bond. Release is never guaranteed.

  • Minnesota Statewide Coverage

Someone may be held in another county. GPS helps families across Minnesota, not only in Sherburne County.

Sherburne County Jail & Custody Information

Sherburne County has one county jail, in Elk River. The jail, the Sheriff's Office and the District Court each handle different questions, so it helps to know which one to call.

The county describes the jail as a major regional facility. Besides people held by Sherburne County, it houses people held for other agencies, including federal custodial authorities.

Checking Custody
Use the official inmate search for people currently held, then call the jail to confirm details.
Asking About Bail
The jail can give bail or bond information for an in-custody inmate. It needs the person's full name and date of birth.

Good to know

  • Bail or bond can be posted at the jail lobby, Door D, 24 hours a day.
  • People held for a federal agency follow that agency's process — an ordinary Minnesota bail bond may not apply.
  • Procedures can change. Check the official jail pages before you go in person.

Sherburne County Jail Visitation & Inmate Services

Once you've found someone, you may want to visit, talk or send money. The jail sets the rules for each, and they can change — always check the official page first.

  • Schedule Visits Before Arriving

    Sherburne County uses scheduled visitation.

    • Walk-in visits are not allowed.
    • Visitors need a valid government-issued photo ID.
    • Review the jail's visiting rules before your visit.
  • On-Site vs. Remote Video Visits

On-site and remote video visits follow different procedures.

    • On-site visits are scheduled and free.
    • Remote visits are by appointment and carry a fee.
    • The county lists NCIC as the scheduling provider.
  • Phone Calls & Messages

People in custody can make outgoing calls through the jail's communication system.

    • Incoming calls to inmates are not possible.
    • Prepaid accounts and paid messaging are offered through the jail's provider.
    • Calls and messages may be monitored.
  • Commissary & Inmate Accounts

Money put into an inmate account is separate from criminal bail and from a bail bond premium.

    • The county lists in-person kiosk, online and phone deposit options.
    • Deposit fees may apply.
    • An account deposit does not pay bail.
  • Mail & Property

The jail has separate rules for mail, property and authorized correspondence.

    • Mail has strict format and content rules.
    • Items that break the rules may be returned or rejected.
    • Don't drop off property without checking the jail's current instructions.
  • Transfers, Release & Records

A custody record can change because of a transfer, a release, a court order or another agency's hold.

    • A listing is a snapshot, not a guarantee.
    • Verify current details with the facility holding the person.
    • Mail for someone transferred or released may be returned.

05 · Bail & release

Bail Options After Locating an Inmate in Sherburne County

Minnesota bail works differently from other states. The court sets bail, the jail accepts direct cash bail, and Minnesota Statutes Chapter 60M governs commercial bond premiums.

Court-Set Bail and Release Conditions

Court bail standards decide which offenses allow release on posted bail. For other offenses, a person may stay in custody until a judge decides bail or conditions. The court may add conditions when bail or a bond is posted.

Cash Bail vs. Surety Bond Premium

Cash bail is the full amount paid to the county as a promise to appear. A surety bond lets a licensed bail bond company post the bond for a premium — a fee that is not returned. The Sheriff's Office does not recommend any specific bonding agency.

Bail Payment at Sherburne County Jail

For direct cash bail, the county says:Pay at the jail lobby, Door D, 24 hours a day.Bring the exact cash amount.Bring a current government-issued photo ID.Credit cards, checks and money orders are not accepted for direct cash bail.Official bail and bond release information (opens an official external site)

Release Processing and Other Holds

Once the jail is authorized to release someone, they are processed and released at the jail lobby. Processing times vary. Other holds or warrants may delay or prevent release, and GPS cannot guarantee release timing, eligibility or financing.

Minnesota Bond Premium Rules

  • The court sets the bail amount — not the jail and not GPS.
  • The premium follows the rate the surety has filed and had approved in Minnesota.
  • The statutory minimum premium is $100.
  • Bonds of $10,000 or less: at least 50% of the premium is collected before posting; any balance is repaid within four months.
  • Bonds over $10,000: at least 30% of the premium is collected before posting; any balance is repaid within at most 12 months.
  • Any balance needs a signed promissory note. No financing or payment plan is guaranteed.
