02 · Bail process

How Bail Bonds Work in Albany

The usual sequence after an Albany arrest. Every case is different; the court makes the decisions, and release timing is never guaranteed.

  1. 01

    Step 1 of 6

    Arrest or Citation in Albany

Albany Police Department or another authorized agency, such as the Sheriff's Office or State Patrol, may make an arrest. A citation does not automatically mean someone is booked into jail.

  2. 02

    Step 2 of 6

    Confirm Custody and Booking

If the person was taken into custody, check the Stearns County current-inmate roster. They may not be listed yet, may already be released, or may be held for another agency — confirm where they actually are.

  3. 03

    Step 3 of 6

    Verify Court-Set Bail and Conditions

Stearns County District Court decides release. A judge may set money bail, conditions, both, or release without money bail. Confirm the actual terms through the court or another authorized source.

  4. 04

    Step 4 of 6

    Contact GPS About Bond Options

Call (763) 288-2581. The person's name, custody status and any bail or charge details help GPS explain whether an authorized surety bond may be available. Approval is not promised.

  5. 05

    Step 5 of 6

    Complete Premium, Paperwork & Underwriting

Identification, signed agreements, the approved filed premium with a receipt and, where required, a cosigner, collateral and underwriting review.

  6. 06

    Step 6 of 6

Post the Bond and Follow Court Orders

Bond acceptance and jail release processing take varying time, and another hold can delay release. After release, every court appearance and condition must be followed.

Statewide GPS guides Albany families can use when looking at bail options in a Stearns County case. The order is not a ranking of local offenses.

Not every charge is eligible for bail, and no amounts are guaranteed — the court decides in each case.

05 · Costs

What Bail Bonds Cost in Albany

Albany does not have a separate city bail bond premium schedule. Stearns County District Court determines monetary bail and release conditions, while Minnesota's filed-rate and statutory rules govern commercial surety premiums statewide.

Court-Set Bail vs. Bond Premium

The court sets the bail amount. Paying it directly in cash is one option. A surety bond instead costs a premium — a fee paid to the bail bond agency that is not returned at the end of the case.
Minnesota Criminal Procedure Rule 6 (opens an external site)

Filed Surety Rates & Minimum Upfront Payment

Under Minn. Stat. §60M.02, premiums follow rates filed with the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Bonds of $10,000 or less require at least 50% of the premium collected before posting; bonds greater than $10,000 require at least 30% collected before posting. Any unpaid premium balance requires the applicable approved, signed promissory note and the statutory repayment terms. The statutory minimum premium remains $100.
Minnesota §60M.02 — Bail Bond Premiums (opens an external site)

Promissory Note & Repayment

Any unpaid premium balance is put in writing, with a payment schedule and any allowed interest. The signer is responsible for that balance regardless of how the case ends. The same §60M.02 rules above govern premium payment.

Collateral & Cosigner Responsibilities

Some bonds require collateral or a cosigner. Minn. Stat. §60M.03 governs how collateral is held and returned. A cosigner may owe the full bond if the defendant misses court.

06 · Jails & custody

Albany Jails & Custody Information

Albany has its own police department but no county jail or criminal court. People held for court are generally booked into Stearns County Jail in St. Cloud, and cases go to Stearns County District Court there — confirm current custody and release terms through official sources.

Emergency: call 911. Albany Police is the city's own municipal department. It shares the 400 Railroad Avenue building with City Hall, but the two have separate phone numbers and separate jobs. Neither is a county jail or a place to pay criminal bail.

The two Courthouse Square addresses are service locations of one district court, not two courts — confirm the assigned hearing location with the court. Judges determine bail or release conditions; GPS does not set bail amounts or hearing schedules.

  • Locating an Albany Arrestee

Start with the arresting agency — usually Albany Police at 320-845-2200 — then search the person by name on the Stearns County current-inmate roster. If they aren't listed, call jail central control. The police department may not know about every later transfer, and Albany City Hall does not keep custody records.

Stearns County Jail central control (24/7): 320-259-3760

  • County Jail Booking

An arrest and a jail booking are different events. Booking at Stearns County Jail involves identification, photographs and records processing, so a recent arrest may not appear on the roster right away. A citation or summons does not automatically mean someone was booked.

  • Official Inmate Search

Stearns County's inmate and warrant search page links the current-inmate roster, which shows adults presently recorded in custody. It is not an arrest log, a warrant system or a court record, and it may not update the moment someone is booked or released. GPS is independent of it and cannot change it.

  • Bail and Release Conditions

Stearns County District Court may release someone without monetary bail, on conditions, with money bail, or a combination. Conditions such as no-contact or no-alcohol terms still apply after a bond is posted.

  • Cash Bail vs. Surety Bond

Cash bail paid directly as the court authorizes is different from a surety premium paid to a bail bond agency, which is not returned. Confirm the bail amount, conditions and payment rules with the facility actually holding the person. Those procedures do not define how GPS accepts payment.

  • Probation and Other Holds

A warrant, probation matter or other legal hold can keep someone in custody even after bail is posted on the Albany case, and one bond does not clear every hold. See our Warrant and Probation Violation guides.

  • Court dates

    Court Appearance Information

Stearns County District Court handles criminal cases filed in Stearns County, including applicable Albany cases, and its orders set the release requirements. Check current case information for the filing court and assigned hearing location instead of assuming a building. Calendars change, some matters are not listed publicly, and Minnesota Court Records Online is a court-record source, not a live jail roster. Missing court or breaking a release condition can lead to a warrant or revoked release. Official court paperwork controls.

09 · About

About Albany, Minnesota

  • Albany is a Stearns County city, ZIP 56307, on the Interstate 94 corridor between the St. Cloud area and Melrose, with Avon to the east and Freeport to the west.
  • Railroad Avenue is Albany's main street. The city's history notes that the railroad leased its right-of-way only to rail shippers, so most shops were built on the north side of the street — a pattern still visible downtown.
  • The Great Northern and Soo Line railroads once bounded the city. Turning the abandoned Great Northern corridor into the Lake Wobegon Trail was the Albany Jaycees' idea; they raised money and support before the trail opened in 1998.
  • North Park, about 56 acres beside North Lake, is the largest of Albany's six city parks, with trails, a splash pad, disc golf, courts and the Jaycee and Lions shelters. Pine and Pelican lakes lie a few miles northeast.
  • Albany Police Department and City Hall share 400 Railroad Avenue but have separate numbers: police non-emergency 320-845-2200 and City Hall 320-845-4244, open weekdays 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  • Albany Police handle local law enforcement, but custody and court are county functions: people held for court go to Stearns County Jail, and cases are heard in Stearns County District Court, both in St. Cloud.
