01 · Why GPS

Why Choose GPS in Paynesville

Help for a southwestern Stearns County city with its own police department, where custody and court matters are handled by Stearns County in St. Cloud.

  • Paynesville Bail Assistance

Paynesville Police handle local calls inside the city. GPS helps families follow a Paynesville arrest from there to Stearns County custody records and Stearns County District Court in St. Cloud.

  • Available 24/7

  • Police, Jail & Court Guidance

Paynesville Police Department, Stearns County Jail and Stearns County District Court each have a different job. We explain which one you need — and which phone number to use — before you call around.

  • Clear Premium & Paperwork Guidance

Before you sign, we go over the court-set bail amount, filed surety rates, the minimum collected before posting, your receipts and every agreement and obligation.

  • Eligible Surety Bond Assistance

When the court authorizes a bond and underwriting is satisfied, GPS can discuss surety options. A cosigner or collateral may be required, and no bond or payment plan is pre-approved.

  • Minnesota Statewide Coverage

Stearns County or anywhere else in Minnesota — GPS can help with the jail and court involved. GPS has no branch office in Paynesville.

02 · Bail process

How Bail Bonds Work in Paynesville

The usual sequence after a Paynesville arrest. Every case is different; the court makes the decisions, and release timing is never guaranteed.

  1. 01

    Step 1 of 6

    Arrest or Citation in Paynesville

Paynesville Police Department or another authorized agency, such as the Sheriff's Office or State Patrol, may make an arrest. A citation does not automatically mean someone is booked into jail.

  2. 02

    Step 2 of 6

    Confirm Custody and Booking

If the person was taken into custody, check Stearns County's official current-inmate roster. They may not be listed yet, may already be released, or may be held for another agency — confirm where they actually are.

  3. 03

    Step 3 of 6

    Verify Court-Set Bail and Conditions

Stearns County District Court decides release. A judge may set money bail, conditions, both, or release without money bail. Confirm the actual terms through the court or another authorized source.

  4. 04

    Step 4 of 6

    Contact GPS About Bond Options

Call (763) 288-2581. The person's name, custody status and any bail or charge details help GPS explain whether an authorized surety bond may be available. Approval is not promised.

  5. 05

    Step 5 of 6

    Complete Premium, Paperwork & Underwriting

Identification, signed agreements, the approved filed premium with a receipt and, where required, a cosigner, collateral and underwriting review.

  6. 06

    Step 6 of 6

Post the Bond and Follow Court Orders

Bond acceptance and jail release processing take varying time, and another hold can delay release. After release, every court appearance and condition must be followed.

Statewide GPS guides Paynesville families can use when comparing bail options in a Stearns County case. The card order is not a ranking of local offenses.

Not every charge is eligible for bail, and no amounts are guaranteed — the court decides in each case.

05 · Costs

What Bail Bonds Cost in Paynesville

Paynesville does not have a separate city bail bond premium schedule. Stearns County District Court determines monetary bail and release conditions, while Minnesota's filed-rate and statutory rules govern commercial surety premiums statewide.

Court-Set Bail vs. Bond Premium

The court sets the bail amount. Paying it directly in cash is one option. A surety bond instead costs a premium — a fee paid to the bail bond agency that is not returned at the end of the case.
Minnesota Criminal Procedure Rule 6 (opens an external site)

Filed Surety Rates & Minimum Upfront Payment

Under Minn. Stat. §60M.02, premiums follow rates filed with the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Bonds of $10,000 or less require at least 50% of the premium collected before posting; bonds greater than $10,000 require at least 30% collected before posting. Any unpaid premium balance requires the applicable approved, signed promissory note and the statutory repayment terms. The statutory minimum premium remains $100.
Minnesota §60M.02 — Bail Bond Premiums (opens an external site)

Promissory Note & Repayment

Any unpaid premium balance is put in writing, with a payment schedule and any allowed interest. The signer is responsible for that balance regardless of how the case ends. The same §60M.02 rules above govern premium payment.

Collateral & Cosigner Responsibilities

Some bonds require collateral or a cosigner. Minn. Stat. §60M.03 governs how collateral is held and returned. A cosigner may owe the full bond if the defendant misses court.

06 · Jails & custody

Paynesville Jails & Custody Information

Paynesville has its own police department but no city jail or criminal court. People held for court are generally booked into Stearns County Jail in St. Cloud, and cases go to Stearns County District Court there — confirm current custody and release terms through official sources.

City Hall shares the 221 Washburne Avenue address but handles city business only; its number is not a police line. Neither office is a jail or a place to pay criminal bail.

Judges determine bail or release conditions; GPS does not set bail amounts or hearing schedules.

  • Locating a Paynesville Arrestee

Start with Paynesville Police at 320-243-7346, or police dispatch at 320-243-3434, then search the person by name on the Stearns County current-inmate roster. If they aren't listed, call jail central control. Police may not know about every later transfer, and City Hall does not keep custody records.

Stearns County Jail central control (24/7): 320-259-3760

  • County Jail Booking

An arrest and a jail booking are different events. Booking at Stearns County Jail involves identification, photographs and records processing, so a recent arrest may not appear on the roster right away. A citation or summons does not automatically mean someone was booked.

  • Official Inmate Search

Stearns County's inmate and warrant search page links the current-inmate roster, which shows adults presently recorded in custody. It is not an arrest log, a warrant system or a court record, and it may not update the moment someone is booked or released. GPS is independent of it and cannot change it.

  • Bail and Release Conditions

Stearns County District Court may release someone without monetary bail, on conditions, with money bail, or a combination. Conditions such as no-contact or no-alcohol terms still apply after a bond is posted.

  • Cash Bail vs. Surety Bond

Cash bail paid directly as the court authorizes is different from a surety premium paid to a bail bond agency, which is not returned. Confirm the bail amount, conditions and payment rules with the facility actually holding the person. Those procedures do not define how GPS accepts payment.

  • Probation and Other Holds

A warrant, probation matter or other legal hold can keep someone in custody even after bail is posted on the Paynesville case, and one bond does not clear every hold. See our Warrant and Probation Violation guides.

  • Court dates

    Court Appearance Information

Stearns County District Court, in the Seventh Judicial District, handles criminal cases filed in Stearns County, including applicable Paynesville cases, and its orders set the release requirements. Check current case information for the assigned hearing location instead of assuming a building. Calendars change, some matters are not listed publicly, and Minnesota Court Records Online is a court-record source, not a live jail roster. Missing court or breaking a release condition can lead to a warrant or revoked release. Official court paperwork controls.

09 · About

About Paynesville, Minnesota

  • Paynesville is a southwestern Stearns County city, ZIP 56362, where Minnesota Highways 23 and 55 meet — the routes that tie it to Richmond and St. Cloud to the northeast and to Eden Valley to the southeast.
  • The original settlement grew up at a ford of the North Fork Crow River. Lake Koronis — just over 3,000 acres, about a mile from town — sits in the surrounding lakes area, along with Rice Lake to the southeast.
  • In 1886 the Great Northern and Soo Line railroads both reached Paynesville, splitting the community into Old Paynesville, North Town and Jim Town. The three merged in 1914; the old Jim Town area is today's historic downtown, where many original buildings still stand.
  • The paved 16.5-mile Lake Koronis Recreational Trail loops the lake past Veterans Park and Lake Koronis Regional Park, and the Glacial Lakes State Trail connects the area toward Cold Spring and Willmar. The Paynesville Area Historical Society runs a local museum.
  • Paynesville Police Department, at 221 Washburne Avenue, is the city's own agency, with a chief, full-time and part-time officers. It lists two numbers: the department at 320-243-7346 and police dispatch at 320-243-3434. City Hall, in the same building, has its own line, 320-243-3714.
  • Policing is a city function, but custody and court are county functions: people held for court go to Stearns County Jail, and cases are heard in Stearns County District Court — both in St. Cloud, not in Paynesville.
